Amrapali at the 77th ICCR Day Celebration in the Embassy of India, Tokyo (Japan)

The AMRAPALI (Society for ARTS), one of the leading socio-cultural organistaion of Assam, founded by the power dance couple and Cultural Activists Rudra Jayanta Bhagawati and Dr. Pranaame Bhagawati recently performed Kathak dance recital along with the students from Amrapali Institute of Arts, led by Dr. Pranaame Bhagawati at the 77th ICCR Day Celebration, held on April 9, 2026 in the Embassy of India in Tokyo, Japan and organised by Swami Vivekanand Cultural Centre, Tokyo and Embassy of India, Tokyo, Japan.

This presentation also showcased an ‘India Exhibition’ displaying Muga Silk of Assam, hand made mask of Chhattisgarh, handloom saree of West Bengal, hand made head gear of Mizoram and ornament, brass statues of Uttar Pradesh and others. The troupe consisted of seven members including, dancers, students, and academicians was an initiative under Beyond Borders by Dr. Pranaame Bhagawati, wherein she along with the team officially handed some recent issues of the Amrapali Magazine to Mr. Aman Akash, Director, Swami Vivekanand Cultural Centre, Tokyo.



The performance was designed and choreographed on the mesmerizing music conceived and directed by Rudra Jayanta Bhagawati, starting with an invocatory composition on Borgeet ‘Brahma Adi Kori’ and Gurupadukabhyam, followed by a Tarana and Vande Mataram. Dr. Pranaame Bhagawati’s scintillating abhinaya on a Japanese music, showcasing the facets of a Nayika, was much appreciated by the locals. Performance by the students of the Amrapali Institute of Arts, Ms. Wamiel Pranaame Kashyap and Ms. Saipriya Nandi Purkayastha was much appreciated for being young and upcoming talents in their respective field. Ms. Wamiel’s speech ‘When the Lotus met the Sun’ an Indo - Japanese Cultural perspectives and similarities was an important factor of the whole presentation. The India Exhibition was conducted by Abigail Ngaizemkim Gangte and supported by Tikendrajit Sarmah, Alaka Bhagawati and Bhaswati Nandi Purkayastha.

Dr. Pranaame Bhagawati is known for her acute interest of promoting Indian culture, especially bringing forth the essence of the northeast India both during her tenure as the Director at the Kathak Kendra, New Delhi as well as being the Regional Director at ICCR Guwahati Regional Office. She prominently points that, “I always consider it as my privilege whenever I get an opportunity to establish varied cultures of Bharat. When I am entrusted with a position or a designation, it becomes my duty to perform it being unbiased and deliver it to the fullest.”
