Nishi Misra speaks ~

As we celebrate International Women's Day in March 2026, it's heartening to see remarkable strides women leaders are taking especially in redefining the landscape of education in India, bringing about transformative change and inspiring future generations. Women leaders bring unique perspectives, empathy, and collaborative approaches, positively impacting students, particularly girls, inspiring them to pursue their dreams. However, despite progress, women remain underrepresented in leadership roles, especially in higher education and decision-making positions. Factors like limited access to mentorship, lack of institutional support, and deep- rooted gender norms hinder their elevation. Vedic references to the legendary woman sage, Gargi, during King Janaka’s philosophical assembly describe her confidence as she questions Yajnavalkya with metaphysical questions about water, air, space and ultimately Brahman.

सा होवाच गागी वाचक्नवी —

“याज्ञवल्क्य, यदि इदं सर्वम् आपः वत इति…”

However, she is also cautioned.

मा अतिप्राक्षीः गार्गि... Do not question too far...by Yajnavalya himself.

Our minds seem to have grown increasingly closed. In many ways, our education feels disconnected from real life. It is astonishing how comfortable parents are watching their children study exactly what they once studied, and in exactly the same way—despite the world having changed dramatically between generations. Years of rote learning and unquestioned reverence for textbooks have almost rewired us. And yet, learning is a natural human instinct. From the moment we are born, we begin learning—and we continue throughout our lives. The search for meaning is innate. Each of us is born with the biological capacity to make sense of the world around us. Experience is the key to meaningful learning. It nurtures the very instinct that makes us human? Women leaders must gain from the experience of others before them. They must own their voice. Speak up, share perspectives, and assert boundaries. Confidence and self-advocacy are key to leadership growth. By building a support network women leaders can cultivate mentors, peers, and allies who uplift and guide. No one succeeds alone; we must leverage our relationships to amplify impact. Leading with empathy and vision, balancing compassion with decisiveness we can inspire teams with a clear, inclusive vision that empowers other women to thrive.
