Vidha Lal

In the ever-evolving rhythm of Kathak, where tradition meets the pulse of contemporary expression, Vidha Lal emerges as a luminous force—deeply rooted, yet dynamically expansive. A torchbearer of the Jaipur Gharana, and a recipient of the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Vidha’s journey is one of devotion, discipline, and quiet intensity. Her artistic foundation was shaped under the watchful guidance of Geetanjali Lal at the National Institute of Kathak (Kathak Kendra), and later refined through the intimate rigor of the Guru–Shishya Parampara a space where art transcends technique and becomes a way of being. Her dance is not merely performance; it is a dialogue—between rhythm and stillness, speed and grace, tradition and individuality. From the global stage of the London Olympics Cultural Festival to the culturally vibrant Khajuraho Dance Festival and Nishagandhi Dance Festival, her presence has resonated across continents, carrying with it the timeless language of Kathak. Yet, beyond the stage, Vidha Lal represents a rare synthesis of virtuosity and vision.

As an empanelled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and an ‘A’ graded artist of Doordarshan, her artistry is both nationally celebrated and institutionally recognized. Her accolades ranging from the Young Women Achievers Award by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry to the Atal Samman reflect not just excellence, but impact. In a moment that bridges discipline with sheer audacity, Vidha etched her name into the annals of the Guinness World Records, executing 103 flawless chakkars in a single minute—a feat that speaks as much of control as it does of surrender to rhythm. A Gold Medalist from Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, she continues to shape the cultural discourse not only as a performer but also as a thinker and mentor. Serving on the Executive Board of the Sangeet Natak Akademi and as an Advisory Member of Kathak Kendra, she stands at the confluence of tradition and policy, practice and pedagogy. At the heart of her journey lies Kathak Resonance Dance Academy—a living space of transmission, where young dancers are not merely taught, but shaped. Vidha Lal does not just pass on compositions; she nurtures sensibilities, instilling in her students the essence of Kathak as lived experience.

YOUR PERFORMANCE, STUNNING PERSONALITY AND COMMAND OVER YOUR ART HAVE INSPIRED MANY UPCOMING KATHAK DANCERS. STILL WHAT DO YOU THINK IS LACKING WITHIN SOME ARTISTES IN ACHIEVING THEIR RESPECTIVE MARK WHEN COMPARED TO THEIR AGE AND TALENT?

As an artiste, I feel that talent and age are only the starting points of a journey - they do not guarantee depth or excellence. What is often lacking today is ‘riyaz’ with mindfulness and a deeper angagement with the parampara of Kathak. Many young dancers are exceptionally gifted, but sometimes there is an impatience to achieve visibility rather than to build a strong, rooted foundation. Kathak is not just about speed, technique or presentation - it is about ‘theheraav’, ‘nazakat’, tehzeeb’, layakari, discipline and an internalized understanding of abhinaya. Without immersing oneself in these subtleties, the dance can remain external. There is also at times, a gap in seeking authentic guidance and surrendering to the Guru Shishya Parampara, which is essential for true growth. Another important aspect is consistency in today’s fast - paced, digital world, distractions are many, and the discipline required for daily, dedicated practise often takes a back seat. But it is this very discipline that shapes an artiste’s individuality and longevity. Ultimately, achieving one’s true mark in Kathak requires patience, humility and an ongoing dialogue with the art form. When an artiste moves beyond the desire for quick recognition and commits to an honest, lifelong ‘sadhana’, the journey itself becomes the destination and that is where true artistry begins.

WITH THE MASSIVE COMPETITIONS OUT IN THE WORLD FOR DANCERS OF VARIED GENRES AND ALSO WITH OTJER PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, HOW WOULD YOU SUGGEST FUTURE CLASSICAL ARTISTES TO COPE UP TO ACCESS THE TOP?

In today’s world, where there is immense competition not only within dance but across diverse professionals, it is important for classical artistes to first anchor themselves in their identity. For a Kathak dancer, this means a deep - rooted commitment to the grammar, aesthetics and philosophy of the form. When your foundation is strong, you don’t complete - you stand apart. At the same time, one cannot ignore the changing landscape. I believe young artistes should learn to adapt intelligently. Understanding presentation, using digital platforms thoughtfully and being open to interdisciplinary exposure without diluting the purity of the art. Visibility is important, but it should be a reflection of substance, not a substitute for it. Consistency in riyaz, physical and mental conditioning and continuous learning are non negotiable. Along side, developing qualities like resilience, patience and self - awareness as equally crucial. There will always be comparison and pressure, but true growth comes from an inward journey rather than external validation. I would also encourage artistes to seek meaningful mentorship and remain connected to the Guru Shishya Parampara, which provides not just training but also direction and grounding. Ultimately, to access the top is not merely about reaching a position, it is about sustaining excellence with integrity.
