Profile
Dr. Pranaame Bhagawati is an arts and culture professional, editor, cultural entrepreneur and Kathak exponent with over two decades of experience in the promotion, documentation and dissemination of Indian and especially Northeastern arts and cultural traditions. She is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Amrapali Magazine, an arts and culture publication established in 2014, and the driving force behind the Amrapali Institute of Arts. Through her editorial and cultural initiatives, she has worked to create platforms for dancers, musicians, scholars, artisans and cultural practitioners, while connecting India’s traditional heritage with contemporary audiences.
She has also served as the Director of Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, becoming the first person from Northeast India to hold the position. During her tenure, she introduced structured academic and administrative initiatives, including the integration of theory and practical examinations and a more systematic timetable for students. Her work extends beyond Kathak into promoting Indian classical and folk traditions, cultural diplomacy, Northeast Indian heritage, handloom and crafts, publishing and cultural event curation. She has conceptualised and led initiatives such as the Amrapali International Arts Conclave, Amrapali Abhinava Aador Awards, Chimera Mega Event for Students and various cultural dialogues and collaborative programmes.
As an Editor-in-Chief and cultural curator, Dr. Bhagawati is particularly interested in bringing lesser-known cultural narratives into the mainstream while presenting Indian traditions through an accessible, contemporary and aesthetically engaging lens. Her projects frequently explore the relationship between tradition, identity, heritage and contemporary cultural expression.
She is also the author of Kathak Kalpika, an extensive educational work on Kathak designed to bridge systematic learning with performance practice and digital resources.
With a career spanning more than 23 years, Dr. Pranaame Bhagawati continues to work at the intersection of dance, publishing, cultural entrepreneurship and heritage advocacy, with a particular commitment to creating sustainable platforms for artists and giving greater visibility to the cultural wealth of Northeast India.
